FAQs: Everything You Need to Know About RAM Mounts but Were Too Afraid to Ask
Over the years as a RAM retailer, we have had a huge number of questions – so here are a few of the more common ones. By the way we welcome your uncommon questions too and we’re always happy to put our thinking caps on.
I have changed tablet or phone and it doesn’t fit my cradle any more?
If it’s a Tab-Tite cradle then if then it’s often simply a case of replacing the top and bottom cups. X-Grips will fit a wide range of devices but if that doesn’t work you may need to go to the next size option (bigger or smaller). Form fitting cradles for Apple and Garmin will need to be replaced. Quick-Grips have some adjustment available in the side supports but a -PD3 may need to be replaced with a -PD4 (or vice versa) if that doesn’t work.
I want a base that does not require any holes or drilling. What’s available?
For non-drilling options there are a few alternatives:
RAM Tough-Claw, Tough Clamp or G-Clamp / Yoke Clamp, U-Bolt base, Windshield Clamp or Square Clamps or Seat Rail bases may be suitable for your situation.
Suction cup bases come in a couple of sizes and there are single cup, dual cup and even triple cup options. Suction cup bases do require a smooth surface. If you have a dashboard that isn’t smooth there is a RAP-279C dashboard base that creates a smooth surface for the suction base regardless of the surface that it’s being placed on.
Adhesive bases come in a variety of sizes and provide a secure base on many types of surface.
Magnetic bases will work on ferrous materials and there is even a magnetic base (RAM-MAG48-4U) that can be used on glass up to 6mm thick.
For vehicle use there are drink cup holder bases, seat wedge bases and a seat-mate system for heavier equipment that uses the passenger seat as a base. A small Torque base will mount on the rails of the headrests.
I have an existing mount, but I want to change the arm length. What do I need?
RAM Alloy arms in B, C and D series come in Short, Medium and Long versions – changing them out is a very simple process.
The composite B and C series arms are only available in Short or Medium lengths.
If you need to change the cradle that’s simple in the RAM universe. You may be able to utilise the ball base on the rear of your existing cradle.
How do I find individual components if don’t need a whole mounting kit?
Most RAM mounting kits are made of parts so we can normally supply the individual components – just ask us if you are unsure

While there is not a drawing for every mount and component available, many are included on the individual product pages.
Do RAM mounts really dampen shock and vibration?
The answer is yes. The patented design utilizes a rubber ball and socket that greatly reduces the amount vibration that can be transmitted into electronics. RAM® Mounts are not guaranteed to alleviate known vibration issues with Apple iPhone cameras. Exposure to vibrations, like those generated by high-powered motorcycle engines, might impact iPhone cameras. Click here to learn more.
I have lost my hardware, can I buy hardware?
We stock a few hardware kits and replacement end caps for the X-Grip. If there is not a hardware pack part number available, the hardware cannot be purchased separately. The entire product would need to be purchased again.
