Light Aircraft EFB Solutions - Using a RAM mount for your EFB

How to Build the Perfect RAM Mount Setup for a Tablet in a Light Aircraft

In the modern cockpit, tablets have become vital tools for navigation, communication, and flight planning. Whether you're flying with AvPlan, OzRunways, or ForeFlight, having your tablet securely mounted and easily accessible enhances both safety and efficiency. That's why Kiwi pilots across New Zealand trust RAM Mounts - known for their strength, adjustability, and aviation-grade reliability.

This guide will help you select the ideal RAM Mount components for securely mounting your tablet in a light aircraft, tailored to New Zealand flying conditions and NZ CAA guidelines.

The 3 Key Components of a RAM Mount:
1. Base - Attaches to your aircraft
2. Arm - Connects the base to the cradle
3. Cradle - Holds your tablet securely

Base Options:
- Yoke Clamp Base: RAM-B-121U - Fits 0.625"-1.25" tubes
- Glare-Shield Clamp Base: RAM-B-177U - High-mount option
- Seat Rail Base: RAM-B-131B or RAM-B-316-1-202U - Mounts to seat tracks
- Suction Cup Bases: RAM-B-166U (single), RAM-B-189BU (dual), RAP-B-365-224-1U (triple)
- Screw-In Bases:
          - Round: RAM-B-202U
          - Diamond: RAM-B-238U
          - Rectangular: RAM-B-202U-1525

Adhesive: RAP-B-378U

Arm Lengths:
- Short: RAM-B-201U-A
- Standard: RAM-B-201U
- Long: RAM-B-201U-C

Remember that arms can also be connected using the RAM-B-230U

Cradles:
- X-Grip Universal:
    - 7"-8": RAM-HOL-UN8BU
    - 9"-11": RAM-HOL-UN9U
    - 12"+: RAM-HOL-UN11U

- Form-Fit:
     - iPad Mini 6: RAM-HOL-AP36U
     - iPad Pro 11": RAM-HOL-AP20U

- Tab-Tite (multiple versions depending on the size of the tablet and the port access required)

Example Setups:
- Cessna 172 Yoke - iPad Mini: RAM-B-121U, RAM-B-201U, RAM-HOL-UN8BU
- Piper PA-28 Window - iPad Air: RAM-B-189BU, RAM-B-201U-A, RAM-HOL-UN9U
- Seat Rail - iPad Pro 11": RAM-B-231Z-2U, RAM-B-201U-C, RAM-HOL-AP20U

You can also use a RAM Knee-Board set up which is ideal if you are moving between airframes or if you have no space for a tablet in the cockpit (as an example see the RAM-BM-LA1-AP15U)

NZ CAA Considerations:
- Comply with CAA rules for EFBs
- Avoid obstructing instruments or controls
- Tether devices for redundancy
- Confirm placement with a maintenance engineer if unsure
