RAM recommends the use of a tether when using the X-Grip outdoors - so unless it's in the car or the living room better tether up!
It's a little confusing the first time but like most things in life it quickly becomes second nature. Just put the tether over the cradle and then when the device is in place pull the corners over the corners of the device . If you try to pull the whole end of the tether over the device this will lead to frustration, damage, bad words and increased heart rate. There's a useful diagram here and a video here
