Will this fit a UN7 or UN8 X-Grip? No, it's sized for UN10 cradles. For smaller X-Grips, use the RAM-HOL-UN7-UP or RAM-HOL-UN8TU, or the universal RAM-TETHER1U.

Do I need the tether? Not for every install. The X-Grip holds securely on its own; the tether adds a margin for motorcycles, boats, aircraft and other exposed or high-vibration setups.
