The RAM-GDS-DOCK-AP37CU is the USB 3.1 version of the AP37 Tough-Dock. It is a spring-loaded vehicle dock that holds and fast-charges a large-format Apple iPad wrapped in an IntelliSkin® Next Gen sleeve, and the faster bus carries a 5Gbps data connection alongside the power. That data path is the reason to choose this variant over the standard dock; it is what allows an HDMI signal out through a GDS® Tough-Hub™. Pogo pin contacts mean the tablet docks and charges in one movement, with no cable plugged into the device itself.

Works With

Apple iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Gen), iPad Pro 13 and iPad Air 13, each wrapped in the matching IntelliSkin® Next Gen sleeve. The sleeve is not included and is required; the dock charges through the sleeve's pogo pins, not through the iPad's own port. The dock connects to RAM® ball and socket systems via a 4-hole AMPS pattern ball adaptor, sold separately. FAQs

What does the 3.1 actually get me?

A real data connection. The standard AP37 dock passes power and a slow USB 2.0 link; this one runs at up to 5Gbps, which is what you need for video out through a Tough-Hub or for moving files at any useful speed. If the iPad only ever needs charging, save the money and take the standard dock.

Do I need an IntelliSkin sleeve as well?

Yes. The dock charges through the pogo pins on an IntelliSkin® Next Gen sleeve, so the iPad has to be wearing one. It is not included with the dock.

Do I need a special charger?

Yes; a Power Delivery (PD) charger is required to supply sufficient power to this dock.

Is this the locking version?

No. This dock is non-locking. RAM make a key-locking USB 2.0 dock (RAM-GDS-DOCKL-AP37CPU) and a locking Cool-Dock with a fan (RAM-GDS-DOCKLF-AP37CPU); note that both of those are rated at 15W rather than 60W.
